Four minutes to put a problem back at its real size. It does not solve it.
Theme
Seeing today at its real size, not the size worry makes it.
Most of what feels urgent today will not be remembered next year.
Four minutes to put a problem back at its real size. It does not solve it.
Two columns, one honest read. Most of the weight is usually in the second column.
Circling usually means the parts you decide and the parts you do not have been stored together.
No podcast, no music, no phone. Fifteen minutes of your own thinking.
A short change of timescale. It does not make the thing unimportant; it makes it sized.
A short piece of noticing. There is nothing to conclude at the end.
Worry repeats until it is either acted on or put down. This decides which.
Rehearsal feels like preparation. Past the second run it is mostly practice at being angry.
Worry has no sense of scale. Perspective is mostly the work of restoring it.
When something goes wrong, it expands to fill whatever attention is available. A short email can occupy an entire evening.
Two questions restore scale reliably. What part of this is mine to decide today? And what of this will still be true in a month?
Neither question solves anything. They return the problem to its actual proportions, which is usually enough to act.
Three different categories, and most frustration comes from treating them as one.
There are things you control: what you say, what you do next, what you stop doing. The list is short and almost entirely about your own conduct.
There are things you influence: how a conversation goes, how a child behaves over years, how a piece of work is received. Here effort matters but outcomes are shared, and expecting control is what produces the sense of failure.
And there are things you can only allow to exist: other people's opinions, the past, the weather, the fact that a change happened without your agreement. Acceptance in this sense is not approval. It is a decision about where to stop spending effort.
Sorting a problem into the three takes about a minute and usually changes what you do next. Most of the relief comes from moving something out of the first column that was never in it.
