Finding Perspective

Five days of putting a problem back to its real size. Useful when one thing has taken over everything.

  1. DAY 1

Day 1 — Name it once

Write the problem in a single sentence. One sentence only — the length is the exercise.

  2. DAY 2

Day 2 — What happened, what you concluded

Separate the facts from what you decided they meant. Keep both, but keep them apart.

  3. DAY 3

Day 3 — What is yours

Separate the parts you decide from the parts that depend on someone else or on time passing.

  4. DAY 4

    Day 4 — A year from now

Ask what you will actually remember about this in a year, and which of those parts you can influence.

  5. DAY 5

Day 5 — The smallest step

Choose one small action and take it today. Then stop planning; the problem is now the right size.
