Make the next ten minutes better

The day is not salvageable as a whole. The next ten minutes usually are, and they are what you are actually in.

How to do it

  1. Stop trying to rescue the day. Say that plainly to yourself.

  2. Change one physical thing: stand up, open a window, wash your face, leave the room.

  3. Choose one small thing that would make the next ten minutes less unpleasant, and do that.

  4. Do not extend the plan beyond ten minutes.

Recovery on a bad day tends to happen in short sections rather than all at once.
