Confidence

Acting before you feel ready, and letting the feeling catch up.

Confidence often comes after doing the thing, not before it.

The two-minute start

Confidence is built by evidence. This gets you two minutes of evidence before doubt finishes its argument.

Do the first repetition

The first attempt is information. It is also usually worse than the second, which is the point.

Confidence comes second

We are taught to wait until we feel ready. The order is usually the other way round.

People who appear confident are rarely people who felt ready. They are usually people who have done the thing before, badly at first.

Confidence is an accumulation of evidence, and evidence can only be gathered by acting. Waiting for the feeling produces no evidence at all.

So make the first attempt small enough that failing at it costs nothing, then make it. The feeling follows the action, at its own pace.

The cost of constant comparison

When the comparison group keeps changing, enough becomes a place you can never arrive at.

Comparison is not a character flaw; it is how people calibrate. The difficulty is that we now compare upward almost continuously, and with a group we did not choose.

Each time a standard is met, the group quietly changes. The house is fine until you see a better one. The salary was ambitious until it became the baseline. Nothing about your life got worse, but the ruler moved, so the reading did.

The cost is specific. Attention moves from what you have to what is missing, effort gets spent on the wrong things, and satisfaction becomes structurally unavailable, because there is always a higher comparison within reach.

There is no way to stop noticing other people, and pretending otherwise does not help. What can be done is to define enough in advance, in your own terms, and to notice when a comparison has replaced your own judgement about what would be a good week.

This is not an argument against ambition. Ambition chosen deliberately is one of the better parts of a life. It is an argument for knowing whose standard you are working to, and for allowing yourself to arrive somewhere.
